Crate Training an Adult Cane Corso

Crate training is not a puppy-only skill. Here is how we introduce it to adult rescue dogs.

A crate is the single most useful tool in a rescue Corso household. It gives an overwhelmed dog somewhere to be off duty.

Get the size right

A 54 inch heavy duty crate suits most adult Corsos. The dog should stand, turn and lie flat without folding.

Never use it as punishment

Feed in the crate. Toss treats in and walk away. Leave the door open for the first few days so the dog chooses to go in.

Build duration slowly

Closed door for thirty seconds, then a minute, then five, always while you are in the room. Only leave the house once the dog settles calmly at twenty minutes.

Expect a protest

Whining is normal for the first sessions. Wait for a pause before opening the door so quiet gets rewarded, not noise.

When it is not the answer

True separation anxiety and crate panic look different from protest, and they need a behaviour plan rather than more crate time. Call us before it escalates.
