What the first month with a rescued Cane Corso looks like in Arizona — heat, decompression, training and the honest costs.
Adopting a Cane Corso is not like adopting a lab mix. These are 90 to 120 pound guardian dogs bred to think for themselves, and in Arizona you are layering desert heat on top of that.
The first 30 days
Most rescue Corsos need a full month before you see who they really are. We coach every adopter through the 3-3-3 rule: three days of shutdown, three weeks of learning the routine, three months of settling in. Do not invite the neighbourhood over in week one.
Heat is a real risk
Between May and September, walks happen before sunrise or after dark. Pavement that feels warm to your hand will blister a paw pad. Brachycephalic-leaning Corsos overheat faster than owners expect.
The honest budget
Food, preventatives, training and a vet fund put most Corso households in the range of $150 to $250 a month before emergencies. Large-breed emergency surgery in the Phoenix metro routinely runs past $4,000.
